Southern California Mom Gives Birth to Octuplets
Here is a bit of interesting pregnancy news from Southern California. A mom in was scheduled to have a c-section to delivery her seven babies, but found out it she was having octuplets.
The hospital had scheduled a cesarian section for seven babies, but doctors were surprised when an eighth came out at 10:48 a.m.
“My eyes got to be the size of saucers,” Dr. Karen Maples told The Los Angeles Times, explaining her reaction to the last birth. “We just went on and delivered the babies.” She said the babies were in stable condition and would probably remain in the hospital for at least two months. She said the mother should be released in a week.
As if being pregnant with 7 wasn’t enough, to find out that there are actually 8 would be quite a shock. Their condition is now reported as stable, and will hopefully remain that way. With higher groups of multiples such as this the babies are often very premature, which can lead to increased health concerns for the babies.
Of course a birth like this brings up the debate on the ethics of having so many multiples at one time. The time, money, and help that any family would need to brings these babies home healthy and to care for them is certainly more than most families could afford. There are points on both sides of the issue that are certainly worth thinking about. If you discovered that you were having this many babies, would you choose to carry them all?
